BACK TO WORK
So the government shut down is now over. And what has been accomplished? Essentially nothing. Everyone lost on this one. Here’s who:1. The GOP Congress: Reasonable members like Lou Barletta are being pulled in two different directions. The party has been taken hostage by the Tea Party and this branch of the government has the lowest approval rating in history.
2. The Democratic Senate: They will now have large targets on their back as the 2014 election arrive. The right wing nuts will take to the media and accuse them of “taking away our freedoms” and paint the Senate as obstructionists!
3. The American people: Denied of services, millions of Americans were hurt and inconvenienced. But not of course the Congress.
4. The taxpayer. Congressman Cartwright had it correct when he said the shutdown would cost money. 24 billion. The next time a Republican starts saying, “My children’s future, my children’s future, look at the debt they’ll have to pay!!!” point out this colossal waste of money.
5. Government workers: Already under fire by average citizens, these people will need to catch up and be blamed when services are backlogged and not being performed fast enough.
6. The President: Finally he stood up to the bullies. But if President Obama had not compromised in his first term, if he had not kissed the asses of Republicans who kicked him in the gonads after he reached out, this would never have opened. One of the life lessons the President never learned as child from his Social Worker mother and WWII veteran grandfather was this: you knock a bully the first time and don’t let him/her get up. President Obama, reelected to a second term has wasted his first year of that second term. Not since Richard Nixon’s first year of his second term has a President had such an awful year after re-election winning by a majority of voters.
LOSERS….ALL.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
Speaker John Boehner had the quote of the week on WLW Radio in Cincinnati. Boehner conceded that his party lost but “fought the good fight”. Fighting to stop a bill passed by the Legislature and upheld by the Supreme Court? Stopping economic recovery in its track messing with historical tourism? Making the markets nervous with talk of a government default? Stopping patients who were undergoing clinical cancer studies? Letting thousands of cattle rot on the prairie after a bad weather event in the Midwest because the Agriculture Department was closed down? That is the good fight? Really?County Controller candidate Michelle Bednar. (Photo: LuLac archives).

CARTWRIGHT CALLS FOR MORE
Congressman Matt Cartwright released the following statement regarding the bipartisan agreement to reopen the government and pay our bills:“Today, the American people have seen Congress reach a bipartisan agreement to reopen the government and avert a default on the nation’s bills. While the compromise that has been reached will provide our economy with the stability it needs, we must move forward together and do more.
“After more than two weeks spent facing off across a partisan divide differences were set aside to prevent disaster.
“Part of this agreement instructs leaders to name conferees to a budget conference committee. The hope is that this action will assure Congress continues the work of setting this country on a path to job growth and fiscal sustainability. The conference committee, which is charged with producing its negotiated budget package in December, is the appropriate place to discuss our differing views on the best way to chart a course for economic growth.
“Now we must return to our most important job – expanding the economy and protecting middle-class families.
“Let’s get together and actually pass a budget.”
